Did you try this?
Make sure the copy of the old profile is not called Default. Stick it in the profiles directory with the new default.
Run Firefox profile manager. Start->Run, then type "firefox.exe -p" (without the quotes). Hopefully the old profile will show up in the list and you can select it to open Firefox with.
