An Old Git style techy question for you all

Now, I have never ever owned a game console. However, I have decided that, since we are both intensely competitive, if I get the wife one for XMAS I could potentially avoid watching some of the mind-numbing chick flicks and yank feel-good series by challenging her to a game of whatever.

However, everyone I spoke to about the Wii says the novelty wears off after a month, plus the fact that there is no chance of finding one anyway. The PS3 and Xbox prices are ridiculous for the amount of time we would actually ever use the thing. So, is buying a PS2 still worthwhile ? Or will I end up with a 100 quid piece of kit which has no games in a month ?
