10.4[.x] is a paid upgrade from earlier versions (most recent version in that series is 10.4.11). As is 10.5[.x].
You can upgrade as far as 10.3.9 (which is where I am)
Your only free option would be to borrow a 10.4 retail disk from someone. Hasn't mbk got that version lying around? I don't think he can be telling the truth about upgrading from 10.3.5 through to 10.4.x without having a 10.4 disk.
What was the software you wanted to try? There might be a 10.3.9 version.
