Grant's signings
I believe that all of our troubles lie firmly at the feet of Peter Grant and the board. Grant for signing such s**t and the board for allowing him to do so.
Let's look at his signings 1 by 1.
1) David Marshall - By all accounts he looks like a decent players. His lack of command severly lets him down at times and was it reall necessary for Grant to spend almost half our transfer budget on a GK when someone like Gilks would have been sufficient and we were crying out for players in other positions
2) John Ostemobor - Initially I was impressed with him but now it's obvious to see why he's failed to make the grade at every decent club he's been at. When you're a defender you have to be able to defend. Especially when you've got a winger playing infront of you who doesn't really help out much defensively. A real problem area for us. We've never properly replaced good old steady Eddy.
3) Simon Lappin- Where oh where do I start? A league 2 player at best. In all fairness I believe that we've never played him in his favoured position, which I think is on the left hand side of a midfield 3. But if that was always going to be the case, why did we bother signing him in the 1st place? He's not a defender (ie left back) and he's not a left winger. Whenever he plays I always feel that in someway he's always going to contribute to us conceding a goal.
4) Ian Murray - Another of Grant's Scottish contingent. Only a few years ago he was playing the Frank Lampard role for Hibs and banging in 20 goals a season. That alerted Rangers to sign him but they decided he was better off as a defensive mid/covering center half. Where we think he's best who knows? Another player that we've signed and not really known how to fit him into our side/system. Yet another player whos confidence we will ruin by making him look bad by playing him out of position.
5) Jullian Brellier - Came with the reputation as being a God in a decent Hearts team. Personally I've not seen anything to show me what the fuss was all about. In glimpses we've seen what he can do, but generally seems way off the pace for championship level and runs around like a headless chicken and always seems to get himself booked for making stupid, badly timed tackles. The jury is definately still out.
6) Darel Russell - They say that a player should never return. Unfortunately I feel that's the case with Rusty. I much as I admire his effort and workrate, I just don't see what he really adds to the team. If he was to have a creative player alongside him then maybe it would work, but playing him with Brellier or as our so called creative spark just totally unbalances our team in the middle of the park. I'm sure that the 600k we spend on him could have been more wisely used.
7) Luke Chadwick - One of the more impressive performers, but is he really necessary? At a time when we should have been concentrating more on getting a strong 1st eleven than squad depth, did we really need to sign him? More positions needed improving than right wing. I feel that he would be better utilised behind the front two strikers. He could become our best creative force, with hucks and Croft left and right and Brellier/Russell tidying up behind him
8) Dave Striker - Unfortunately he's not had a chance to show his worth due to injury and being overlooked by Grant. Has looked a decent player from what we've seen of him and could well be the kind of strike partner that Cureton has been crying out for. Why Grant paid 700k for him and never gave him a chance I'll never know. The excuse that he needed to settle is bollocks. A player settles in by getting to know his teammates on the pitch and in Dave's case scoring goals. He's not going to settle in by playing for the stiffs on a cold Monday night away at Southend.
9) Jamie Cureton - Give him a chance and he'll score. Something we seem unable to do. We don't play to his strengths. Something ehich is ridiculous considering we're all expecting him to be our top scorer this season. Grant f**ked up big time by critisising him in public. Just one of Grants many mistakes when it came to player management
I'm sure that I'll missed a few players out but to be honest I'm depressing myself the more that I think about the situation that we're now in. So it's now time for a nice cold beer and some comedy on tv. As you can see, Roeder really has his work cut out to sort out Grants mess and people have to realise that we've no God given right to stay in this league let alone even think about the play-offs. Roeder has to get rid of some of the s**t that Grant signed and install some much needed confidence into this very fragile squad. It would be a big enough task for Houdini let alone Roeder, but for some reason I really feel that he's the man for the job. Let's all get behind the team, whoever plays, and give all we can to support the boys. City till I die
