Poole in Dorset

They turned an old community hall into Belsen for three weeks, I remember an elderly lady who lived nearby came to the gate on one of the days while I was dressed as a British soldier, guarding the entrance, to complain that we had desecrated the building with Swastika banners. She was so hurt and burst into tears, I had to try and explain on behalf of the producers that although the site had been important during the war, we weren't intending to offend them but to educate a new generation of viewers of what happened and that our heart was in the right place... That sort of thing makes you appreciate the power that the war still has over people even today.

Worse still that in one scene I had to play a dead jew and lie in the freezing rain on top of a pile of dead 'children'.
