Thing is, the creators ultimately need to get paid

Otherwise no-one will bother to create; and someone, somewhere needs to edit, put together and market top quality content. Whether it's music or dvd or audio/e-books or whatever, the much-maligned "middle-man" - record company/TV company/publisher - adds a heck of a lot of value and usually has to take the initial risk in investing in the creative without knowing whether or not there'll be a return on that investment in terms of sales. Those people, as well as the creatives, need to get paid - not necessarily a fortune but enough to justify the investment in not just the successes but the failures, and also the infrastructure to support the industry.
