Earnshaw signed knowing full well that he wanted to be back in the Prem in the next few years and if he wasn't he wanted a way out. Without the clause he wouldn't have come, it's as simple as that.
And as I say, £7 million is alot for a striker with half a season's worth of experience in the top league who is now evidently injury prone.
