Well, grey squirrels are a classic example of an invasive non-native species

Our native squirrel is the red squirrel

About 100 years ago, some British aristo imported some grey squrrels from America for his parkland. Needless to say they bred and spread, and because they are bigger, stronger, more adaptable, store more fat and carry some disease fatal to reds, they have wiped out the red squirrel from almost the whole of the UK. A few survive in England in Northumberland and Cumbira, and there are still some pockets of the Highlands where there are reds (we have a pair on our hill in Scotland and I defend them fiercely).

So yes, they are as you described, and not cute.
