Truth is, they were both terrific

As, come to think of it, was Kevin Harper. FWIW, I was gutted when Crouch left, seeing him as if anything more crucial than Huckerby. But let's be fair here: Hux was so good in 2003/4 that as far as I was concerned, the Nationwide League First Division might as well have been renamed the Darren Huckerby League. Wigan and West Brom wanted him as well as us - and it was pretty obvious whoever got him would be going up.

Best in our history? No. Even in our recent history, Eadie, Bellamy, Fox and Gordon were all as good - Sutton, Gunn, Bruce, Watson and arguably Townsend even better, and that's before we even consider the likes of Keelan, Peters or MacDougall. But we've been bloody lucky to have such a hugely talented player at our club, and he's plainly someone who cares hugely. There's nothing all that different in his recent comments to what he said last season at times too; indeed, there was actually no difference between what he said on Saturday and what Peter Grant said on Sunday. He's just being honest, because he wants the best for us - and I really don't think he deserves to be criticised for that.
