You'll be more talkative without being stupid, you'll find it easier to engage in conversation, without being stuck with nothing to say.
I'd say just drink enough so you open up a bit, don't get so drunk that you are slurring speach or puking everywhere. Remember to be polite pay compliments to mother in law (what a lovely meal, the meat is very tender and has a lovely flavour, etc) and bride to be (you are looking lovely tonight, I really liked your idea for fundraising for the local childrens hospice etc). Don't just talk about yourself, ask them questions, and look like you are interested when you are listening.
Take flowers or plant or chocs or whatever mother in law likes etc.
