I seem to recall that they had no voting rights and paid no dividend. I believe that part of the clubs 'sales' patter was that you should not expect to make any money out of buying these shares.

i.e it was charitable scrounge dressed as a share issue. The only thing in common with other share issues was that a piece of paper with share written on it was sent to the generous 'share holder'.
