One problem with football is...
even if everybody at every club did their job absolutely to the best possible standard and made no mistakes whatsoever there would STILL be teams at the top and teams at the bottom. I'm guessing the fans of those relegated teams would take a lot of convincing that their board was doing a half-decent job, let alone the perfect one it actually was.
PS Not suggesting by any means that any board, let alone ours, is doing a perfect job (!), but the theoretical example does illustrate how the influence of external factors can make it difficult to judge board performance (hence the reason you get a lot of criticism but not very much useful suggestion of what should be done differently)
