and also it was a lot easier to compete then. The Prem clubs parachute payments didn't make as much difference as they do now, and there there weren't as many multi-millionaire owners floating around. The odds are stacked against Grant far more.

You need a decent big striker and a goalscoring midfielder to succeed. So everything therefore hinges on Strihavka coming good (because Brown will never fulfil the first role) and Jimmy Smith getting fit and coming good (because none of the other midfielders look much of a goalscoring threat). Grant has been robbed of those two so far but the crunch time is approaching. Strihavka now has to start and once Smith is fit and available Grant will have no injury excuses (there is no longer ANY excuse for Brown being in the squad let alone on the pitch- if Dave isn't fit then Martin should start)
