yup, in the end they removed over 90 tons of soil

and lots of other assorted gardeny type stuff. It's all sorted now but speccy bloke comes back every month to test the well water. Not a patch on having your hoose fludded though I guess but still quite a memorable pain in the arse quotient all the same.
