Employment not really my thing, but generally the position is (a) in theory you are obliged to work out your notice period (and obviously they are obliged to pay you through it); but (b) that if you just bugger off to your new job without working your full notice, there's not much they can do about it. They then don't have to pay you, so it's hard for them to claim damages from you for the cost of a replacement worker(and other heads of damage are usually v hard to ptove, like lost business because you weren't there).

The real exception to this is when you are a very senior and important person, and they actively do not want you to start your new job and competing with them. In those circumstances they could seek an injunction forcing you to work your notice, usually at home ("gardening leave"). But I'm guessing that won't apply to you ... !
