Tell me about it!
My home village (Brancaster) is a festering mass in the Summer, whilst you can sit and watch the tumbleweed in the winter. On the site of the old "Links Garage" a load of houses were built, ALL of them are second homes, the one that faces the road, 7 bedroom, £750'000, is a second home and used twice a year-a week in summer, a week at Christmas! The owners complained to the Parish Clerk (my Mum!) that they couldn't find "a little man or woman" to look after them whilst they were in-situ, offering £4 per hour and claimed they were "helping the local economy" and "none of you want to work" (when I was cutting the grass at Brancaster Staithe sailing club in my hols 20 years plus ago I got £6 per hour!).
Much of the site of the old Roman Fort was taken up by the hideous development that is "Branodunum" in the mid-70's, and yet, when the village applied to build some social housing in a donated area of agricultural land a few years back -a success, all lived in, all local people, nice one-the residents at the hideous Branodunum opposed it, saying it spolit their views and wasn't needed!!!!
The village shop and PO is on the way out-ran successfully and through hard work and never being closed by the Johnsons and then the Saunders families-then it was taken over by some incomer consortium who made it all trnedy, started selling fancy prints and Bulgarian bread, employed about 12 members of staff, 6-7 of which were working there at any one time and who then decided they had to close it down as they weren't making a fortune!
"The Ship" is run by some mad Essex bloke who is rude to everyone and sends people out if they order food at 8:50pm, even though the sign says it can be ordered up to 9pm.
Hell in a hand basket, I could go on and on and on...makes me spit as well mate, really does-and I agree with you about BM and the Lifeboat, and, God rest its soul, the Gin Trap, kin' chamber pots and all....
