they were getting out of a car somewhere with a crowd of the general public in attendance and loads of people APPLAUDED THEM. WTF?????

Of course I do know why. They are celebrities now and so are guaranteed applause just by the sheer act of existing. ("Ooh look! It's them famous people off the telly! Hoooray!!!!")
