You meet a qualifying time, enter events, or about 40, heats of 6, fastest times qualify for the final of 6 etc

He was in the same age bracket as me, that's what I meant by swimming against him, and will have been swimming for a south coast team

I remember looking it up somewhere and a shoulder injury meant Beattie had to chose which career to persue, football or swimming
