setanta problems solution

The engineer has just left after his visit to sort out my Setanta freezing / blocking / breaking up problem. He said that my signal levels were borderline and because the Setanta channels are at the top of the frequency range of the cable transmission, they would be the first to suffer from low signal level.

He increased my signal level from -2dB to +3dB, he achieved this by a visit to the green street cabinet and by replacing the plug on the input to the splitter in my external omnibox.

As always, in my experience, the Virgin media service was superb. However, it should be noted that my Setanta picture had been perfect since Saturday anyway and during the period of disruption 20th - 27th July, some satellite users had the same problems at the same time. So there could have been a series of unconnected issues (highlighted by a sudden rise in subscriptions) or there could have been a Setanta transmission problem, that Setanta are yet to own up to.

If you have a widescreen telly then the STB should always be set to 16:9. If you have an old style telly then the STB should always be set to 4:3.

The problem with Setanta is that some programmes are not sending the flag correctly to indicate a widescreen transmission. If this occurs the solution on a widescreen TV is to manually set the TV to widescreen in the TV aspect ratio settings. Remember, the STB should already be set to 16:9.
