The board can take some share of that blame

They engineered a situation where they made Cashton a figure for booing by firstly not telling the truth about his "injury", then saying that there was nothing they could do to keep a player who wasn't happy and wanted to leave. Ashton didn't help matters by barely trying after he signed his new contract and agreeing to the faked injury before the West Ham cup game.
