I have a house there, but haven't really lived there properly since late '96. But it's a multi-cultural area, largely working class with rows & rows of terraced houses with only Lloyd Park for some greenery.
I found it a safe enough area to live and it has great transport into london (Vic line and 20 mins by train to Liverpool St); but there's not much going on for a night out except in the village where there's a few nice pubs, cafes and restaurants (around the top end of Orford Rd).
It does, though, have the longest street market in Europe and William Morris was born there (at the end of my road as it happens) and Lloyd House has a Morris museum.
Apparently the Krays used to "own" most of the local businesses back in the day and apparently were drinking in Chequers on the High Street before & after (and supposedly during) one of their murders.
Oh, and the legendary Small Wonder records was on Hoe Street many years ago.
