ITV4 to launch in November

ITV will launch its new channel aimed mainly at male viewers, ITV4, on November 1.
Mick Desmond, the chief executive of ITV Broadcasting, has told staff that the channel will air exactly a year after the launch of the golden oldies channel, ITV3.

"ITV4 will be an entertainment channel showcasing a mix of brand new US drama, top-end British drama, comedy, movies, sport, sci-fi and factual programming," Mr Desmond wrote in an email to staff.

"More details of programming and schedules will be unveiled in the coming months but the new channel will complement the programming on sister channels ITV1, 2 and 3 and will appeal to a more male audience than ITV2 and a younger audience than ITV3 (25-44)."

ITV4 is likely to be broadcast on a new slot on the Freeview service that ITV won in April.

On cable and satellite it will probably take over the slot occupied by ITV's Granada Men and Motors channel.

ITV4 will be the fifth ITV channel, including ITV's News Channel, and is designed to bolster the company's a "family of channels" strategy.

New channels are helping ITV to limit the damage of falling ratings at the flagship ITV1 channel.

ITV2, which specialises in repeats and spin-offs from popular programmes, has been a notable success, catching up with Sky One as the country's joint most popular non-terrestrial channel in the first six months of the year.
