No, I agree that there is no definitive answer, and that essentially it is a style point

I found the wiki page very interesting, especially the discussions about German usage (I had been struggling to remember some schoolboy German!).

Of course the wiki page has many citations which back up your point of view about the acceptability of splitting infinitives. But that wasn't what we were talking about. We were talking about whether the objection is founded on a supposed desire to turn English into Latin. I think the wiki page provides no support at all for that thesis, and in fact demolishes it rather effectively.

You are right that I am prescriptive linguistically (though not about vocabulary; the continual evolution of English vocabulary causes me great pleasure), and as you may have guessed I sat parts of the Latin tripos to keep me amused while reading law!
