He has kept his Conservatism largely to himself and has managed to avoid doing anything particularly annoying.

Departing housemates (after Mary) have all fallen in to the trap of taking people on, of being mean or - in Sam's case - of being unbelievably and unbearably stupid.

Three weeks ago, Derek was a prime candidate to depart having been up for nomination in consecutive weeks, only for the team-Saskia divide to suddenly blow up out of all proportion. Suddenly Derek was a calming influenec amongst the mayhem rather than a paternal irritant.

He is sly and it may be his downfall, but the children of the house all have their enemies and Derek is wise enough to avoid incurring their wrath.
