Full story on Sharp

IRON chairman Steve Wharton expects Billy Sharp's future to be resolved within the next week.

It follows news that the Scunthorpe United striker has now been given permission to speak to Sheffield Wednesday and Wolves.

But Championship rivals Norwich are still the only club to come anywhere near the club's asking price for Sharp, having tabled an offer of £2-million.

Wolves and Wednesday are believed to be back on the £1.5-million mark - and Wharton insists the hot-shot striker won't be going anywhere unless the price is right.

But he believes the end to long-running transfer speculation will come within the next week, with most clubs reporting back for the start of pre-season training next Monday.

"I am sure Billy would want his future resolving by then" said Wharton.

"From talking to him I think he has set his heart on a move this summer.

"I thought he would prefer linking up with his old strike partner Andy Keogh at Wolves - but I know he was impressed with what he saw at Norwich.

"We have given him permission to talk to both Wolves and Sheffield Wednesday.

"But he knows too that both Wednesday and Wolves are a long way short of the asking price we want."

Sharp still has the option of remaining at Glanford Park, though that now is looking increasingly unlikely.

"We have made Billy a terrific offer to stay, though that is likely to be not as much as he is going to be able to get at one of the bigger clubs" added Wharton.

"But we have built in a clause that would mean Billy would benefit from a move if he stayed with us until the January transfer window."
