I actually think its a really good rule

Avoids the chance of teams winning the title thanks to running up the score with a load of cheap goals against the crappy teams. Massacring rubbish teams doesn't make you a worthy champion - coming out in top in those tough games against the best the league has to offer does (or should do).

(Just realised it would probably also help us, because we seem incapable of running up the score on anybody and so aren't likely to beat anyone on goal difference)
