My personal favourite

in terms of saying volumes in very few words was written by Edgar Broughton back in the late 70s, but you need to read it in context. Think of a band on its last legs, in whom very few people are still interested, playing their last European tour in small half-empty rooms, realising that the game's over and that they're pretty soon going to have to settle for everyday domesticity and the stresses that come with that.

Tears on my window like rain in my eyes
And now I'm afraid to go back to those Goodbyes
Why can we only speak down the wires?
Why can we ONLY speak down the wires?"

One thing Edgar had, was he wasn't afraid to use strong images, as he had the ability to understate them. Another thing Edagr had was that for every excellent song there were a fair few ordinary ones - and every album had at least one f**kawful one on it. I still like 'em, though.
