It's not actually that complicated, but once I reckon I've got a handle on it, another bit leaps out and goes "Yeah, but if they haven't averaged £87 (tax year 0708) worth of level 1 NIC earnings per week in the 8 weeks preceding the pay date before they were ill, then SSP isn't payable, so you're going to have to work out their average weekly earnings for the relevant period LIKE THE DUMB CUNT YOU ARE".
And then I have to do that, and then once I've done that, I have to do something else, it's like sitting on a big ballooooon and trying to press all the bits down..
