Mark Lawrenson & The BBC Coverage....
Mark Lawrenson.
Why?
What is the relevance of the man? What does he offer? Did he even play for England? Would the Republic of Ireland have an ex-England international co-commentating on their games, "...Graeme Le Saux, do you think Damien Duff should be brought on now?..", yes, I can see that happening! I know, I know-he's English. But he nailed his international colours and loyalties to the proverbial flag at the age of 19, now, with his effortless use of the mono-syllable still dominating as he progresses into his fifties, the BBC decide he is still the man to offer insight and wisdom in the performances -for want of a better word- of the England football -for want of a better word- team -for want of a better word...
In the Brazil game, he was at it again. Letting us all know how "...well the Brazilians pass the ball..." and how "...Kaka is a great player, John...", well, obviously Motty and the rest of us had missed that fact. Ka-who? Thats a funny name, ha ha! Is he a good player, lets have a look. Well fill my boots with Guinness Lawro, he IS a pretty good player. Thanks for sussing that one out for us. And this Brazil, hmmm-isn't that in Africa? Anyway, lets have a look, yes, they do seem able to pass the ball quite well, hey Lawro, do you think they might qualify for the World Cup one day soon, they'd bring a bit of colour to it, wouldn't they, and bless them all!
Quite why the BBC has chosen to dumb down football the way it is, I don't know. But I hear that one of the pundits on MOTD next season is going to be Tara Parker Tomkinson, hopefully she and Jonathan Pearce will be able to tell us the shops that the players go to and how hard they can kick a ball...and, oh! oh...that it doesn't hurt when they head that ball-thingy, providing they 'header' it with their foreheads, good, thought they might be hurting themselves...now, where does Frank Lampard get his polo shirts, over to you Gary?
Oh for insightful and intelligent football analysis and comment. Where has it all gone, who has seized the rights-is it hiding somewhere on an Icelandic TV channel, or has it fulfilled its rights, got to the end of its contract and got itself a Bosman? If so, can someone, somewhere, please sign it up and offer it back to the viewing public before we can hardly tell the difference between a World Cup qualifying match and "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here"...but hang on, thats what Tara might be saying if she has to share the podium with Jonathan Pearce!
During one of the quieter moments of the game last night (one of the eighty eight minutes of same to be precise), Motty mused "...is it me or does the new Wembley keep in the sound more than the old one?...", to which Lawrenson grunted, and, correct me if I'm wrong, but it was a grunt, maybe a "Springwatch" Barn Owl was with them...anyway, Lawro's mirthful and concise reply regarding the acoustics was "...it's you...". Then-nothing. Cheers Lawro-and hey, those yellow shirts those African lads are wearing, they're a bit bright aren't they?
Unlike the BBC coverage.
