From about 18-24, I suffered pretty badly from panic attacks

I spent quite a few times in that period, battling attacks at night, many without sleep

It's amazing how nervous adrenalin can a) not let you sleep and b) get you through the next day without any general adverse effects

Conclusion really is, you'll only sleep when you're relaxed enough to do so, it's up to you to lay there and get yourself to sleep (easier said than done)
