or even summat more complicated - eg if you win your domestic championship, you get to enter the champions league for the next 2 or 3 years. Something like that.

But perennially trailing in 3rd or 4th, while you concentrate for the last third of the season on the champions league, whcih you qualified for by trailing in 3rd or 4th the season before?
