Yes, three years is a long time in football, but I guess the board were worried he might be ready to leave within a year, if his career was to really take off. The plus side is, if anyone desperately wants him within that three years, they'll have to buy him out and I imagine the price will be high.

I say fair play to the board for showing some balls. It's what the fans wanted at the time too; if the board turn out to have been too quick to judge his talents, then at the end of the day, so were we.
