Just looked up his career on CricInfo

Only played 19 tests; partly because of his Packer days and then because of the S. Africa tour. Had a decent average of about 33 (similar to his first class average).

It also mentions that he was a better coach than player. Looks like I'm the one seeing his playing career through rose-tinted spectacles.
