"Sir Sydney Chapman, who has held the seat since 1979, was one of the luckier Conservatives in London on election night in 1997.

Although he held on to his seat with a wafer thin majority of 1,035, he was only subject to a 13.8% swing to Labour - the lowest swing against the Tories in north London.

The Chipping Barnet constituency is one of three constituencies within the outer London Borough of Barnet.

It lies in the north-eastern third of Barnet bounded by the county of Hertfordshire to the north.

Despite the ruling Labour-Lib Dem coalition on Barnet Borough Council, the Conservatives dominate local politics in this constituency. Every ward in the Chipping Barnet constituency seat except Arkley has at least one Conservative councillor.

The old A1, now A1000, runs vertically through the middle of constituency. Close to this road one finds some pre-1900 housing, but in the main, the constituency was developed as part of the urban sprawl of London in the 1920’s and 1930’s.

Middle class residential areas dominate the seat and there is very little industry. "
