My wife used to work for Telewest (before the merger with NTL, mind) ...

and I can tell you that they certainly did at the time have very stringent early cancellation clauses on thier contracts. It was a daily source of bitter dispute with customers.

No idea whether any of that extends to NTL/Virgin - I gather that NTL were the dominant force in the NTL/Telewest deal.
