I lived in NY for about 6 months in '89

If you're just going for a weekend then you should be able to get an all in deal with an airline - Virgin used to do really cheap ones years ago. Usually you end up somewhere around mid-town Manhattan (somewhere between 40th street and the bottom end of Central Park), which is fine.

Areas to steer clear of: anywhere outside Manhattan unless you know what you're doing. Anywhere north of 100th St.

You'll probably have to queue for immigration on entry to the US because of all the security bollocks.

Time of year: suppose Spring to end of summer is the best. It can get very humid in the late summer though. Right now, it'll be cold and wet and possibly knee deep in snow.

If you're serious about going, I've got a good friend there I could put you in touch with (a she, so no bunk up opportunity there, but she'll show you around).
