My favourite way to spend a day in Paris with someone who's never been

Start at Les Halles metro stop.

Walk to the Louvre (don't go in, unless you want to) - go up to the Da Vinci pyramid bit, then through the small Arc through the Jardin des Tuilieres and up the Champs Elysees to the big Arc, hang a left down Kleber to Trocadero, thence Eiffelwards. Then jump on a metro at Ecole Militaire, down to Ile de la Cite and into Notre Dame.

Only about three miles' total walk and a fabulous day.

Montmartre is great - real soft spot for Place du Tertre even though it's megakitsch, and the Dali museum's worth it (as is the Jeu de Paume), Sacre Coeur is just beautiful (climb the steps) but be aware it's the red light district if staying with kids...
