Transfers
There was a lot of speculation yesterday that we were about to announce a couple of signings. Someone even suggested the club was due to call a press conference at Colney but almost predictably, nothing happened. If there was any substance in the rumours my guess is that there was a last minute hitch along the lines of the Spring debacle. Grant is reported to have been on Soccer Anglia last night saying he wanted 2 or 3 new faces by next Wednesday. He has been saying that since November but has very little to show for his efforts. There are six days of the transfer window left and I am beginning to suspect that, come next Thursday, we will be hearing the usual hard luck stories from Grant and Doncaster - You know the sort of thing 'This player wanted to come but then his dog got sick and he decided to stay and nurse it back to health etc' - Another player was about to sign on the dotted line but then Stevenage Borough came in and snatched him at the last minute.'
After the window closes, the club should take a step back and take a long hard look at its performance in the transfer market over recent seasons. They need to look at their whole approach and ask why they have so much difficulty in attracting even mediocre players, when other clubs pick up players with the minimum of fuss. Above all they need to be honest with themselves. I think an awful lot of naivety is at the root of the problem. The time for excuses is over.
