they do have animated ads (I have an ad filter though), so maybe it tried to download Flash or something. There's also javascript on the page. I'm not clever enough to interpret the page source.
You could try emailing Symantec or the Guardian to see what's really going on - especially if it turns out one of the advertisers is playing silly buggers
