OT - Charity event and need to get basic car mechanic training

Random but here goes.... Basically i am going to take part in the Mongol rally this summer (drive to Mongolia from London) in a car (prob fiat panda) under 1000cc. Now, i have almost no knowledge of cars and need to rectify this. Anyone know of any mechanics courses OR of a friendly mechanic that could help!??
