Books and CD's are only going to help you up to a point
The only way is to get out here and practice it
If you can't do that, join a french club, there is one in Norwich, if only for a short time, or take a two night a week perfection course at a college.
Buy French newspapers and read them regularly, this is a good thing to do as it actually improves your ability to speak about subjects that are current, rather than just buying the bread in the boulangerie.
Order France Football to your door and use football as a subject that you know about to help you with your language. It is very easy to understand a football report as most of the words can be worked out even if you don't know what they are immediately. Your confidence will increase when you realise you have worked out without the use of a dictionary what the words for "transfer window" "free-kick" or "referee" are.
Come over and watch a French football match, eat some nice food, get pissed with the French Canaries, meet a nice French girl, get married and stay here.
There.
