Because:
1. McVeigh is probably the closest we have to replace Earnshaw in a 4-4-2 - the next alternative is Peter the Surfer
2. Picked up a minor injury in the reserve game during the week
3. He wanted to go 3 at the back and push everyone forward.
Initially, I though Grant was too reactive to the other team; he appeared to have studied them and then tried to build a team and formation to counter that rather than impose our own system on the opposition. He has stated repeatedly that he favours 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1, but he doesn't really have the players to do so. He eventually figured out that he also doesn't have players bright enough to adapt to different systems each week, so has reverted to an orthodox formation and stuck to it in the last month or so.
