well, for example:

maternal grandmother lives 30 mins away by car, and looks after the older kid a day a week. (Plus we see her most weekends.)

Problem is there are no direct tube or bus routes to her - getting kid to her on public transport would I guess mean going into central london and then back out again - would take best part of 2 hours.
