The board are to blame.
They backed Worthington, when he should have gone in the summer at the very latest.
They allowed him to spend our money on players who are not good enough.
They sanctioned a wage bill of ?9 million in the championship (only ?2 million lower than in the prem) on the basis that they thought Worthington would get us straight back up (although their favourite line has since become 'relegated teams rarely go straight back up' and the fans have often been blamed for having too high expectations). They also seem to think that this is something to brag about now, as if it proves thier ambition. No. It proves their misplaced faith in Worthington.
Despite our wage bill being higher than they year we won the championship (and higher than most other clubs in this league I presume), they allowed Worthington to assemble a 'squad' that is probably the smallest in the division and severely lacking in quality in key areas. Neil Doncasters words were something along the lines of: 'We give a Nigel a budget to spend and it is up to him how he spends it, whether that be all on one player or on three or four players'. As good a goalscorer as Earnshaw is, its no good spending ?3 million on a striker if we have no money to buy a midfield to supply him (or even enough players to make up a full squad).
The board have a lot to answer for over their management of the club since we got promotion to the premiership.
