i reckon the idea of him critising the players when he first started was to give them a bit of a kick up the backside and to try and show that he was the one in charge and if they didn't start pulling their finger out they'd have to go elsewhere

now that he's done that he's trying to protect them a lot more to show that although he can be harsh, he is still on their side, get a feeling of togetherness in the squad

sort of playing good cop, bad cop but doing both roles himself
