Even if we'd had the most efficient manufacturing going it would still have been trounced sooner or later by the low wage economies - look at the problems in Germany and France right now.

But we didn't, and by 1979 it was too late to reverse the trend you're talking about.

And in any case no industrialist in his right mind would have splashed money in Britain the way things were. I've got first hand experience of this - my dad worked at Bird's Eye in Yarmouth back in the day - he was a union member and no friend of capitalism, but some of the stories he has told me about working practices and union intervention would make your hair stand on end! No wonder the site was eventually closed...
