This is true, taken from guiness world records:
Licence plate no.9 was sold at a hong kong government auction for HK$13million on 19/03/94 to Albert Yeung Sau-Shing. 'Nine' sounds like the word 'Dog' in chinese and was considered lucky because 1994 was the year of the dog. The plate was worth over 8.5 times the value of the Rolls-Royce it was assigned to.
