although you can get stung by the foreign bank. And working for a bank, I don't pay commission. You'll maybe save a few quid by watching the rate, but since the spreads & commissions on offer at FX places are so huge, you'll never notice ...

Only advantages I've found with getting foreign currency in country of departure are: the offers to change back what you don't spend at the same rate, etc. and that you have a bit of cash when you arrive, so don't have to hunt for a cash machine when you're knackered. The latter shouldn't be a problem in America, although it wouldn't surprise me if there were no cash points at the airport ...
