I have the benefit of

having followed a path, and having done so at the right time in history, where I can be ambitious and gamble on higher-paying / more senior / interesting positions or stick with the safe option which I have done the last year or two as the missus is skint while finishing her specialisation so I can't afford to take a risk (and don't really need to although I really do want to by this stage!).

End of the day, I'd say most of us on here are fortunate in our situations. God forbid I have to struggle through life the way my parents did.
