Downing is nowhere near good enough. And what has Rooney done so far...

...this season to earn a place in the starting lineup for England? Nothing that I can think of, and certainly nothing to justify dropping someone who scored twice in the last qualifier.

We missed a natural goalscorer, a fox in the box if you like, like Owen or Defoe. Crouch and Rooney are both good players, but they're both players who are better at holding the ball up for another forward, or dropping deep to link the play.
